Sorry to report the death of Gertrude Smith of Owen Magic Supreme. She would have been 93 next month (October 2013).
Gertrude passed away quietly in her sleep at home which her son, Alan Zagorsky, described as “a blessing.” He said, “She had no cancer, no pain, just a weak heart. We had a great family dinner the evening prior, and she passed overnight.”
There will be a strictly private family funeral according to Alan. He said no donations would be sought and no flowers were necessary. She will be buried next to her sister in New Hampshire next week.
Although she may not have been as recognized as her husband, Les, Gertrude in many ways WAS Owen Magic Supreme. Les (and Carl Owen and now Alan and his team) have maintained the highest standards of magic making, but Gertrude ran the business! She held the company together, particularly in the early years (the mid to late 1960s) pinching pennies and controlling costs. “Mom truly made sure the company survived while Dad was out back sawing a piece of wood!” Alan said in appreciation and humor.
