Here’s what Martin has to say about his new book:
“For the past 15 years or so, some of my free time has been occupied by a research project on puppets and ventriloquism in Scotland. This has included sifting through evidence found in local authority archives and libraries, also newspapers and many other primary sources. A few articles have been published in puppetry journals, but it seemed worthwhile to contribute to the knowledge base of Mr Punch by producing a longer work with many illustrations. A Timber Idol: Mr Punch in Scotland, is now available. The book covers some early references to puppets in Scotland including the puppet character who became Mr Punch, and reveals some of the performers and show families who have kept this comical folk-play alive over the centuries. Various chapters discuss Mr Punch on the streets, at fairgrounds, on the beach, at bazaars and fetes, and also on the Music Hall stage. The book continues right up to contemporary times, and offers some thoughts for the future.”
